Standing In His Victory!

Standing In His Victory

Here I am, covered by the banner of the Chelsea fan of the year 2021!😃 I share in his victory as he places his victorious banner over me! Every win of his is mine and mine his! (yes I’m a Chelsea fan by marriage!😃)

More than His club’s win (I mean our club!😉), this picture expresses what my husband does for me, he spreads his covering of love, protection and care over me. Ever since he chose to be my husband and I agreed to be his wife, he has loved me, covered me, nourished me, strengthened me and yes cuddled me plenty too! 😃😃😃

The picture also reminds me of Ruth and Boaz and the beautiful redemption story that unfolded in their lives.

Ruth the Moabitess, widowed and alone, chooses to return to Bethlehem with her mother in-law Naomi. She had no guarantee that life would be better in Bethlehem, especially with her status as a foreigner, but she was determined to accompany her Mother in-law wherever she went.

As the unseen hand of God would have it, she stumbles into the field of Boaz to pick up some left over grain from the harvest. Boaz shows her kindness when he learns she is Naomi’s daughter in-law. Boaz, she later learns from Naomi is a close relative.

Fast forward into time, Ruth is guided by her mother in-law to seek out Boaz to perform his role as Kinsman-Redeemer, meaning as closest relative, he would take over the estate of Ruth’s late husband Mahlon, marry Ruth, and bear children in Mahlon’s name as per Jewish custom.

“And he said, “Who are you?” So she answered, “I am Ruth, your maidservant. Take your maidservant under your wing, for you are a close relative.”” (Ruth‬ ‭3:9‬)

As the story unfolds we see Ruth married to Boaz, she becomes a mother and lays her son on Grandmother Naomi’s lap. These two widows whose fate seemed sealed, experience restoration. This was all possible because Boaz stepped up as a Kinsman-Redeemer! He spread his covering of love, protection and honour over Ruth, and Naomi was also blessed in the process! Boaz could have said no, and Ruth would have remained a widow and Naomi wouldn’t have known the joy of being a grandmother. But Boaz was unselfish and generous in accepting to be kinsman-redeemer. The relative who was closer in relation than himself rejected the offer because he did not want his marriage to Ruth to interfere with his own lineage. For truly, marrying Ruth meant he would bear children in Mahlon’s name and not his.

“And the close relative said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I ruin my own inheritance. You redeem my right of redemption for yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”” (Ruth‬ ‭4:6‬)

But Boaz counted the cost and paid the price to give Ruth dignity and honour her late husband. What a huge sacrifice on his part!

“And Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, from the hand of Naomi. Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, I have acquired as my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brethren and from his position at the gate. You are witnesses this day.”” (Ruth‬ ‭4:9-10‬)

So yes I’m inspired by Boaz of the Bible! He gets my vote for Gentleman of the Old Testament! He unselfishly and honorably stood up to the task at hand and gave Ruth a second chance!

And I am eternally indebted to my Lord Jesus Christ who did even more so for us when He stepped out of eternity into time to redeem us for Himself. He loved us and spread His covering over us when we were so undeserving!

That covering was His blood which He shed for us! The Blood that washes away our sin and brings us into fellowship with God. Through the covering of the Blood we have forgiveness of sins and protection from all evil!

Like the blood of lambs the Israelites smeared on their door posts when the plaque of death was pronounced, Christ is the Eternal Lamb whose blood exempts us from eternal damnation!

When Christ rose from the grave, having won victory over sin and death and ascended into Heaven, He cast his cloak of victory over us and invited us to share in His triumph! Apostle Paul puts it this way;

“For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,” (1 Timothy 2:5-6)

And again the Bible declares that

“we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37). We are clothed in Christ’s victory!

He gladly chose to be our Redeemer! At great personal cost, He carried the cross mankind deserved and gave up His life on it! He is the Ultimate Kinsman-Redeemer! Our Saviour, our Rock, our Shield!

As the Bible says;

“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”(Galatians 3:13-14)

Christ did for us what no else could do so let’s celebrate His love and stay covered under His banner of love for certainly there’s no better place to be! His victory gives humanity unlimited access to divinity!

“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:14-16)

Thank You Lord Jesus for redeeming me and making me your very own! If you had not come onto the scene, our lives would have been chaotic! But you made a way and made us your own! Hallelujah!

If you are reading this, I hope you identify with Christ as your Redeemer! If not, I urge you to seek refuge under His banner of love. No one else can love you as much as He does!

The Wondrous Cross

When I survey the wondrous cross

On which the Prince of glory died

My richest gain I count but loss

And pour contempt on all my pride

Singing this hymn in church on Good Friday reminded me of when I was a child. I used to hear this  song at church and from my Sweet Mum of blessed memory singing in her high soprano voice at home.

I wondered about that last line of this verse which in my little ears sounded like “and Paul contend on all my pride” . I wondered what Apostle Paul had to do with all my pride!  😃😃😃

Off course as I got to know the lyrics I knew better! 😃

My richest gain I count but loss…the hymn writer reminds us that nothing we have or will ever have or achieve can compare to the excellency of knowing Christ.

At the cross, we see a King become a servant, we see  God take the place of mortal man and exchange His royalty for our human frailty!

At the cross we see the absurdity of God’s love for us! The sinless one took the place of the sinner, and the sentence of the guilty was passed on to the innocent, spotless Lamb of God!

No sacrifice is laid on the altar without blood being shed. God’s love was a bloody affair! Jesus had to bleed for my sins to be washed away! And the blood He shed established a new covenant for all who run to seek refuge in Him!

When I consider that the Word through whom all things were created became flesh, that the Lord of all the Universe, the King Eternal, stepped into our time capsule in order to redeem us, I can’t find words enough to express my gratitude!

Thank you Lord for the cross!

Thank you for your blood!

Thank you for the empty tomb!

For with power you broke through to secure our victory!

Confronted with the love of Christ at the cross, my pride is challenged. Who am I? I was an undeserving sinner yet He chose to take my place and brought me from darkness into light that I may declare His praises on the earth!

All I have, all I ever will be, I owe it to the One who loved me enough to stare death in the face, succumb to its power and then break free of its hold to give me life and life abundantly!

I will give my best to the One who saw my sin and shame and said to me; “Daughter, neither do  I condemn you, go and sin no more”!

Lord, here I am, casting my crowns at your feet, laying my life on your altar, let my life bring you glory!

We’re all like sheep who’ve wandered off and gotten lost. We’ve all done our own thing, gone our own way. And GOD has piled all our sins, everything we’ve done wrong, on him, on him. He was beaten, he was tortured, but he didn’t say a word. Like a lamb taken to be slaughtered and like a sheep being sheared, he took it all in silence.
Justice miscarried, and he was led off— and did anyone really know what was happening? He died without a thought for his own welfare, beaten bloody for the sins of my people.
They buried him with the wicked, threw him in a grave with a rich man, Even though he’d never hurt a soul or said one word that wasn’t true.
Still, it’s what GOD had in mind all along, to crush him with pain. The plan was that he give himself as an offering for sin so that he’d see life come from it—life, life, and more life. And GOD’s plan will deeply prosper through him.

Isaiah 53:6-10

The Cup That Won’t Run Dry!

Who is like You Lord in all the earth?

Matchless love and beauty, endless worth

Nothing in this world can satisfy

‘Cause Jesus You’re the cup that won’t run dry

Treasure of my heart and of my soul

In my weakness you are merciful

Redeemer of my past and present wrongs

Holder of my future days to come.

The words of this song from Israel & New Breed really ministered to me one night in church.

It echoed in my heart and woke me up the following morning. It encouraged me to drink deep from the Lord and focus my heart on Him. It helped me look beyond everything I felt was not exactly where it should be in my life at the time and focus my eyes on my Jesus!

My reflections took me to Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well as recounted by the Apostle John:

“Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?” Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.””

(John 4:10-14 )

Jesus is the only true source we can drink from and never thirst. Sometimes we live our lives in pursuit of something to quench our thirst. It may be a thirst for love, connection, recognition, acceptance, success, power, authority etc but how long can those things sustain us? When that love relationship turns sour, when the one who professes devotion now expresses revulsion that cup can no longer sustain our lives

The cup of love from friends, spouses, family can run dry, leaving you hurt, broken and disillusioned; the cup of success could be emptied in the twinkle of an eye, leaving you disappointed and knocked out; the cup of power can slip right out of your hands and leave you with no anchor to hold onto.

This woman at the well Jesus encountered had been drinking from the cup of  relationship or love that never seemed to be fulfilling enough. At first when Jesus offered her living water, she jumped at the opportunity to resolve an embarrassing situation, which was the shame she felt each time she had to encounter people on the way to the well. We can imagine the wagging tongues of other women and the accusing and disdainful looks she attracted. She was looking for a way out of that. A temporary relief.

However, Jesus was reaching out with so much more than she could ask for! Jesus was reaching out with living water, with redemption from her past and present wrongs. He was ministering to her heart to understand that all she really needed, all her soul really craved was in Him, the Living Water! She was looking for love, connection and fulfilment but five husbands and more hadn’t done it for her. Jesus saw an opportunity to draw this woman into His love, His heart and His mercy. The story ends with a woman who once avoided the people transformed into a woman who was now an ardent evangelist, unashamed to face the crowd (and most likely her one-time accusers) to share with them how the Living Water had quenched her thirst and given her a new lease of life!

That Jesus is still reaching out today. He says;

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

(Matthew 11:28-29)

Rest for your soul cannot and will not be in any man, woman, title, position etc. Rest for your soul and a deep fulfilment in life comes from staying connected to the Source of life Himself, Jesus our Redeemer, our Burden-Bearer, our Living Water!

Other cups we drink from can fail us. One day that position can be lost, that friendship can turn sour, that organization can kick you out, that job could be taken from you, but the cup Jesus invites us to is an everlasting source of refreshment that never runs out. You may be reading this and find yourself in that place where you realize the cup you were drinking from has run dry. I encourage you to turn to Jesus!

Jesus invites you to drink deep from the cup He sets before you; it’s the cup of life; it’s Jesus Himself! The one who gives true meaning to life and satisfies our thirst forever not just in this life but with a promise of eternity!

No Sneaking In

Got a reminder of this 3 year old post on Facebook and decided to share it here. Be blessed.

So as I checked into the airport today my first stop was at the front desk where I handed over my e-ticket and passport and the lady quickly checked the details and ticked my name on her list! Wow! I thought, so if somehow by some glitch my name wasn’t registered I would be on my way back home.

It suddenly dawned on me then that there’s no sneaking in!

Before I could get my Boarding pass, checks were done to ensure I was duly booked. Next stop was immigration (by the way I went through the Diplomat check point – me too I be Diplomat some wai!😊)

Okay, so before I could get to the Boarding Gate, again passport, boarding pass checks. All clear and now I am seated waiting to board the flight.

Off course I know I will still have to show my Boarding Pass to get on the flight.

Hmm…so why all this talk? My dear friend I have been reminded that just as you will not be allowed to sneak onto the flight without the requisite passport, visa etc. so also there is no sneaking into heaven!

Before you gain access to heaven, you need to come in the name of the only one qualified to grant access to His Father’s House, Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God!

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

(John 3:16)

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

(John 14:6)

Only through Jesus, through accepting Him as your personal Lord and Saviour will you be qualified for heaven. You can’t pay or bribe your way into heaven! Cornelius gave alms to the poor but he still needed salvation. Good works without Christ can’t get us into heaven.

Moreover our works on this earth will be judged and so we must be careful to live a life pleasing to God once we have made the decision to follow Him.

The book of Revelation chapter 20 verses 12 and 15 further says that;

“And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

It is a serious thing to think about. Will your name be in the book of life? While you have breath you have the opportunity to seek the Lord, ask for His forgiveness and accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour.

You can simply pray; “Lord, I recognize that I am a sinner, please forgive me and receive me unto yourself. I confess you as my Lord and Saviour and choose to live for you here on earth. Thank you for the gift of salvation and thank you for the access you have given me to heaven.”

If you have strayed from Him or your relationship has grown cold, just open your heart and talk to Jesus, He is a God of compassion and He will receive you into His loving arms.

“Lord, I receive your forgiveness today, I reaffirm my relationship with you. Lord, give me the strength each day to live for you and be true to the higher life in Christ you have called me to so that one day I will be with you in heaven!”

So dear friend, none of us knows when the day will come to meet our Maker. But while we are alive, let’s remember that our actions here count for eternity. Don’t think you can sneak in based on church attendance, your offerings, your role in church as a worship leader, pastor, prophet, evangelist, etc. Titles won’t take us to heaven! Only Jesus can save and only those who make Him their trust and walk in obedience to Him will find their names written in the Book of Life.

Is your name in there?

Shalom

The Truth Set Me Free!

Sometimes the truth hurts.

We hear it and it pierces us deep down in places we feel very uncomfortable with. We feel accused, we feel exposed and sometimes we try to cover up or look for a defence. But a thousand oceans cannot swallow up the truth that exists! Remember Cain who killed his brother Abel? When God asked him a simple question, “Where is your brother?” he got all defensive and asked, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” This was because behind God’s question lay the truth Cain was trying to hide.

We can choose to argue with the truth, we can choose to deny the truth but we cannot change the truth that exists and is confronting us.

When David was faced with the truth of his adulterous and murderous behaviour concerning his affair with Bathsheba, he chose to be repentant and cast himself upon the mercy of God. After all, from his own lips he had declared that the man who had forcibly taken what belonged to another deserved to die, and so when the prophet Nathan unveiled the truth that that criminal was actually David himself, David accepted the truth of his evil actions and sought God’s pardon.

David as King could have thrown his weight about and denied it all, but he chose to admit his sin and ask for forgiveness. No wonder this man is referred to by God as a man after His own heart. David knew well his faults and yet he never let himself be overcome by his failures. He would repent and ask for mercy again and again and strive to be the man God desired him to be.

Yes, the truth can hurt but if we face the truth we can and will be set free. All of us need Nathans in our lives; people who will be bold, wise and tactful enough to confront us when we have taken the wrong path. And beyond that, we also need to have the humility of David to accept and face up to the truth of our actions or inactions and the resultant devastation we may have caused to ourselves and others.

Today, I was confronted with a truth by my husband. He said, “You have gone off your blog.” It was a nice way of saying, “You have not kept faith with your blog”. At first I got defensive; I had a thousand excuses in my mind as to why I haven’t been able to keep up but with a simple question from my husband, I was confronted with the truth of my inactivity:  I had reneged on my commitment to this blog.

So here I am, repentant, and on the roll again!

I am thankful he was blunt with me. I can assure you I am not always thankful when confronted with the truth but I am learning! Without humility we cannot be open to God’s discipline or the correction of those who love us.

Another truth that hit home for me recently was with my commitment to leading a healthier lifestyle this year. It’s been a great journey so far. I’ve seen some kilos roll off and slipped into smaller sized clothes and felt great. So a couple of months ago, I was bent on losing an additional 3kg and I was psyched up for it mentally. Fast forward a few weeks later and I began to cut myself some slack. A little here, a little there; one day of no exercise turned into a whole week of inactivity. One small allowance for my sweet tooth gave way to another. Then came the day of reckoning: I stood on the scale and hated what it told me! “How can you lie!?” I fumed! I was convinced the settings were wrong, especially as it initially gave me a favourable reading, which meant I had lost 3kg and then turned around to put me 1kg behind.

Scale and I were not friends that weekend! I looked at it with suspicion each time I passed by!  Finally I stopped being silly and reflected on my habits in the last two weeks of the month and realized that I had it coming to me after all. I had not been diligent in maintaining the discipline required to get me to my target. I had allowed an extra this or that to escape down my throat and now here I was paying the price!

So instead of hiding from the truth, I am facing it and forging ahead!

The truth set me free to reflect, pick my lessons and move on. Facing the truth has made me re-strategize on the way forward and I know that as long as I keep the discipline and I am honest about where I am and what I need to do to progress, I will see positive results in the days ahead.

Face the truth today and let the truth set you free! The Bible says; “And you shall know the truth and the truth will make you free” (John 8:32).  When we don’t have the truth, we will live our lives on a lie and that’s like living in a house made of straw. It will soon come apart!

Jesus invites us all to receive the truth of His Word, to receive the truth of the Gospel and understand that God loves you and I so much that He gave His only Son so we could become His sons, too. I don’t know what truth you may be afraid to face or what lie you are hanging onto. But I do know and am a witness to the truth that God loves you unconditionally and is ready and waiting for you to surrender your life to Him.

Let His truth become your truth and let that truth set you free to live the abundant life He promises to His children!

Yours in Truth,

Ekua

A Debt I Did Not Owe…And A Debt I Could Not Pay!

I was once approached by a young man who was a church member to guarantee a loan he was applying for from one micro finance company. It did not take much to convince me to sign on as a guarantor as I had considered his reputation and repayment ability and believed he would live up to his obligations.

Fast forward a year or so and this young man called to inform me that an unforeseen crisis had hit him and hence he had not been able to service the loan over a few months. The following day I got a call from the Finance House asking for an appointment with me as the guarantor of this loan in default. I remember being taken aback. To be honest I hadn’t thought of the worst case scenario when I was signing up as guarantor and here I was now having to face up to my obligations! I guess it was only then that the reality of what I had signed up to dawned on me; as a guarantor I was equally liable for the debt I had undersigned!

I obliged and went in for a meeting and was given the total outstanding debt including interest accrued that was overdue. I knew the gentleman was not in a position to pay the debt anytime soon and this is where I had to live up to my commitment.

After considering the options of monthly payments against an outright pay off, (and considering my finances) I wrote out a cheque to clear the discounted debt, glad I could put that chapter behind me.

Taking over the debt on behalf of another meant I was effectively taking his place. He owed a debt he could not pay, I paid a debt I did not owe. I stepped in to take his burden so that he could live a debt free life! I know he was very grateful and relieved as I would have been in his place! Now when we walked on the street, he could be confident that he was debt free and had no past debt to worry about!

Now this incident brought to bear so poignantly for me the divine exchange that took place on the cross of Calvary so many years ago. All of mankind stood accused with our debt of sin hanging over us like a death sentence. God in His infinite mercy, chose to send His only son to stand in our place. Jesus took that debt burden off our shoulders and took it to the cross where he nailed it and by His blood totally blotted out all of that burden labeled sin! He looked at the price I had to pay, knew that I had no ability to pay it, knew I was headed for hell and eternal destruction and chose to take my place, took my burden and freed me from sin!

As I reflected on this I counted myself privileged to have been in a position to help a brother in need.  Perhaps God allowed me to taste a teeny weeny bit of what it meant to take another’s place so I could appreciate the magnitude of His sacrifice for me. Off course I cannot compare the two; my experience was less than a drop in the ocean compared to His extravagant show of love!  But it did help me appreciate what my Saviour Jesus did for an undeserving sinner like me! Because of Him, I am no longer burdened with sin, guilt and condemned to hell, I am saved by His grace and free to live a life of abundance!

Jesus in the garden agonized over the enormity of the task he was undertaking. The thought of separation from His Father tore at His soul till his sweat became blood. And yet He did not balk at the task ahead, He submitted Himself to the process and took our place at the cross, paying a debt he did not owe, so you and I could live free of the debt we owed! Hallelujah!

Jesus did for you and I what no one else could have done. The sinless Lamb of God took the place of sinful man and in an exchange one could only describe as divine and unparalleled, divinity took the place of humanity to fulfill the righteous requirements of the law.

“knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”  (I Peter 1:18-19)

Jesus became a sacrificial lamb for you and I, we did not ask Him to, but He loved us enough to step forward to offer us salvation. What a great love! What a sweet sacrifice!

“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” (I John 3:1)

Picture Abraham about to slaughter Isaac upon the altar; just when he raises the knife, he hears the voice of the angel of God who restrains him and points him to the ram caught in the bush. The ram is sacrificed instead of Isaac. You and I were at that point too. Just when we would have perished in our sins, Jesus appeared on the scene to redeem mankind. He died the death we all deserved so we can live a life free from sin.

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.”  (Ephesians 1:7)

Glory to Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour for the great and wonderful gift of Salvation!

May we never take for granted the Great Price He paid for our redemption!

Thank You Jesus for taking our place!
